Review of “Seekers – The Quest Begins,” by Erin Hunter
“Seekers – The Quest Begins,” by Erin Hunter is the story of three bears who must embark on a long quest to find the solution to global climate change.
Kallik is a young polar bear from North Canada. Times are beginning to get difficult for polar bears, because the ice is melting earlier and earlier every year, forcing the bears to get off the ice, where they can hunt, and onto the land before they are ready. When Kallik’s mother is eaten by orcas while swimming between two ice sheets Kallik must continue the journey to land alone.
Toklo is a grizzly bear cub. Food is scarce for Toklo, his mother, and his brother, Tobi. Not only that but Tobi is sick. There only hope lies in crossing the mountains to reach the river where they can hunt for salmon. But when they arrive they find the river empty—humans have built a dam.
Lusa is a young black bear living in a zoo. All her life she has been used to humans feeding her. She doesn’t even feel restricted by the walls of their enclosure, that is, not until she talks to the new bear who tells her about the world outside the zoo. Suddenly Lusa’s greatest desire is to experience living in the wild for herself. If only she knew how difficult it really was…
“Seekers – The Quest Begins” is very well written. Erin Hunter exhibits a remarkable eye for detail as she defines the bear’s lives and creates an entire culture for them. The subtle details and interesting animal character traits make “Seekers – The Quest Begins” an interesting story in and of itself. However, I also really appreciate the environmental aspects of the tale, as it tells of how human actions are effecting the bear populations.
I highly recommend “Seekers – The Quest Begins” for all young readers. If you have already read this first book of the series then please read the review of the second book: “Seekers – Great Bear Lake” by Erin Hunter.
