I agree that a large part of the charm of this book is the voice. My children read it when they were 10 and 7, and we all loved it.

I love the use of creative fake sources in this book, and how Mitty is such an interesting character. I have never actually thought, “Hmm. Well, maybe I should go get started on my homework,” and actually doing it. It takes real consentration to make myself do it, and it seems Mitty should do the same. I literally loled when Mitty thought, “Crap, now he thinks I’m some fantastic college kid.” I also thought it interesting that even though you are in first person point of view you don’t know that
(WARNING: SPOILER AHEAD)
Mitty was faking sick so he could fight the foreigner terrorists.
To Anonymous (”im a girl and it didnt keep my attention at all” person) I am a twelve-year-old girl and I found it very interesting. Two thumbs up and an extra high five! :D

I haven’t seen the cartoon movie, but I can understand why it might not be as good as the book. Part of the allure of “The Tale of Despereaux” is Kate DiCamillo’s great writing voice. You just can’t capture that in a movie.

The shapeshifting bear is an interesting character for sure. I miss details in books as well at times. I read in bits and pieces throughout the day. Even sometimes waiting at red lights which really irks my son, so it’s easy to miss some of the details. Thanks for stopping by my blog to say hello : D

At the risk of giving too much away I will say that none of the characters benefit from the stolen money. They end up using it for charity. But truly the morality issue in this book doesn’t seem to be covered quite as much as it should have been.

It is always refreshing to find a book like “The Kind of Friends We Used To Be” simply because of its sense of individuality. Interestingly, though, the very children which could benefit from this helpful moral or also very likely to be the ones who will never read this book.

In the end, though, “The Kind of Friends We Used To Be” is great, wholesome entertainment for school age readers.

Oh I like the site! Wonderful how you start with what could be compared to a ‘back cover blurb’ and then give the readers the option of reading more. Also great that you suggest other similar books.

This does seem like a good book with the plausible moral of individuality. With all the media and peer pressure explaining to our youth why they need to be exactly like everyone else it’s nice to see a story about being yourself.
